Feeling tired and worn down at the end of a busy work week? Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just flat out exhausted?
Sign out and start your weekend on a super sweet note with this specialty class featuring restorative yoga. Restorative yoga is just like the name sounds – yoga that is designed to defrag, restore and heal the body and mind. More than simple relaxation, this form of mindful practice offers physical and mental health benefits that can be helpful for chronic stress and pain, common health conditions, and recovery from physically demanding activity, whether for work, sport or play.
With a primary focus on passive resting postures designed to let the muscles and joints release tension and recover. Your body will be supported in a series of postures using a variety of bolsters, blankets, blocks and other props to help calm your mind, ease into your body and make it more comfortable to rest in the postures for longer periods of time, gaining more of the therapeutic benefits. Sessions will also include some gentle movement, Pranayama (breathing practices) and meditation to further your relaxation and recovery.
This specialty class runs on the last Friday of every month. Come along to rest and rejuvenate muscles, release tension and find a deep sense of calm. Just $20 or you can use your Morning/Evening concession card. Bookings are encouraged as spaces are limited.
When we experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system responds, preparing the body to take action – the ‘fight or flight’ response. With ongoing physical and mental stress, this system is constantly working and we remain in a persistent state of heightened tension. This constant ramping up of the body can lead to many of the negative health effects caused by stress.
When you give yourself the opportunity to enjoy restorative yoga postures, you stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system – sometimes called the ‘rest and digest’ response – effectively counteracting the physical effects of chronic stress.
Interrupting this cycle of chronic stress and the ‘fight or flight’ response, by stimulating the parasympathetic system (rest and digest) tells the body, at a physiological level, to stop working so hard. It can then focus on recovery, releasing muscle tension and improving healthy digestion, blood pressure and sleep. Restorative yoga is just as beneficial for a competitive extreme sports athlete as it is for an over-worked frazzled sedentary office worker.
