Stretch and stride your way to a more enjoyable and efficient running experience.

If you have been practicing yoga and running for a while, you may have found that what you do on the mat can improve how you run on the road (or the trails). Developing flexibility, core strength and balance through yoga helped me reach my goals at two world championships and multiple national events. But more importantly I found more joy and freedom in my running through integrating the alignment principles and philosophy of my yoga practice.

If you’re interested in bringing two of your passions closer together, join me in this practical and informative workshop.

The workshop will be split into three parts:
  • Yoga alignment and engagement principles (45min). We will start with a short yoga practice that can be used as a warm up for your run. Following this warm up, I will also review the alignment and engagement principles of yoga that can help improve your posture and performance while running.
  • Practical running session (yes, we will actually be running outside, 60 min). We will jog as a group the 1.2km to Waitangi Park (If it rains, we will go to Kumutoto Lane and run in the carpark). At the park we will review your current running technique. Then we will integrate your yoga principles into your running and explore ways of fine tuning your running technique. This running session will be at your own intensity with a lot of breaks making it accessible to everyone. We will return to Urban Yoga jogging as a group. A smartphone with a video camera to review your technique would be useful but not essential.
  • Stretching and yoga philosophy for runners (45 min). As soon as we get back, we’ll use yoga to stretch and warm down from the run. In addition to the physical elements of the workshop, we will discus some of the philosophical elements of our yoga practice that apply to running.
Please bring:
  • Yoga mat.
  • Running shoes.
  • Running outfit that you are comfortable and capable of doing yoga in.
  • Towel and drink bottle for after the run.
  • Jacket, track pants to wear out afterwards.
  • Pen and pad/journal to write on.

**Please note participants must have a regular yoga practice and be able to run at least 5k in 30 minutes.
